Why product strategy and roadmap are vital for design

Why we’d rather not open Figma until we see the strategy and roadmap?

Great design doesn’t begin in Figma, it starts with a plan. Too often, founders and product teams skip straight to “design some screens” and believe we’ll figure it out on the go. Sure, we can, but it costs more time, effort, and iterations. When strategy and roadmap are clear, everything clicks:

  • Focus over noise: seeing milestones keeps us from polishing features that aren’t big bets.
  • Timing for smarter scope: deadlines show what matters now and what can wait for the next phase.
  • Context for cohesive UX: a roadmap links today’s flow to tomorrow’s features, creating one consistent journey.
  • Metrics that drive impact: defined KPIs (retention, revenue, whatever else) let design chase numbers, not guesses.

Skip the strategy, skip the roadmap - you’ll pay for it in design hours anyway. Let’s map first, then move pixels.
